Alternative Careers: Looking to the Main Campus

Most law students know about the online job database and Purple Sheet available on the Career Services web pages, but there is an additional electronic resource students ought to explore.

The Career Center on the main campus manages UO-JobLink, an electronic database providing students access to various employment opportunities. First, UO-JobLink provides students access to UO's Campus Interview Program (CIP). The CIP is an interview program sponsored by the main campus' Career Center and is an excellent way to explore alternative career opportunities. Through JobLink, students may view CIP employers, research available jobs, submit transcripts and resumes, and schedule interviews. Common CIP employers include top-five accounting firms, Intel, Fred Meyer, government agencies, and numerous other retail and management companies.

In addition to CIP, UO-JobLink is a source of information for main campus career fairs, external job search links, and other career resources. By registering, students will receive email updates and announcements about open job positions and upcoming events.

Although most jobs on UO-JobLink are non-legal, the database provides students the ability to consider job opportunities that might otherwise have gone undiscovered. Students may find interesting alternative career opportunities or broaden their job searches to gain valuable non-legal experience. When broadening searches, students may want to think about long-term career goals: Legal careers may be benefited by working in a non-legal job that provides exposure to an industry around which a future law practice can be built.

How to Register

Undergrads and non-Law graduate students are automatically registered with the Main Campus, but Law students are not. You'll need to go to their home page (http://uocareer.uoregon.edu); choose the Faculty/Staff tab at the top; choose Access UO Job-Link on the left; then Register for a UO Job-Link account under "request a UO faculty + staff UO-JobLink account." Fill out the registration form as accurately as possible (ignoring the instructions for faculty), indicating that you are a Law student. Once you submit the form, your request will go into a holding bin for approval, which is normally done once a day. The system will send you an e-mail with a password when you have been approved.

Interviews

If you want to interview with non-law employers through the Main Campus Career Center at some point, you will need to register and upload a resume. After uploading your resume, the UO Career Center must approve it in their system. (This is completely separate from getting it approved by Career Services here at the Law School.) The system has at times been backlogged for as much as two weeks. If it seems delayed, you can call them at 346-3235 on a day when you're able to go to their office in Hendricks Hall and sign up for a time (30-minute slots) that's available during that day's drop-in hours, 11-4. That way, they can approve your resume in person and set it up in the system so you're ready.

Career Fairs

The Main Campus Career Center schedules periodic career fairs; a Fall Career Fair in early November, Winter in February, and Spring in May; in the EMU Ballroom. You can see information and log in at http://uocareer.uoregon.edu/students/events.aspx when current information is available. If logging in from the home page, you will be able to access the Career Fair information in QuickLinks or through the Events Tab. You are able to interview at the Career Fairs without submitting a resume online if you prefer to avoid the approval process. On the day of the Career Fair, take a resume directly to the representative and sign up for an interview in person.

Job Postings

You can access the Main Campus job postings without uploading a resume. You'll just need to complete the information on the "Academic Information" and "Privacy" tabs in your profile.

If you have any problems accessing the Main Campus system, let Law School Career Services know, and we'll look into it.

If you're interested in exploring alternative ways to use your law degree, we hope you'll check out the CIP and the UO-JobLink!
