Richard E. Alexander
Richard "Dick" Alexander (JD '69) practices in Stoel Rives' Construction & Design group, representing public and private owners, prime contractors, major subcontractors, and suppliers and design professionals in the construction and design field. Mr. Alexander has lectured extensively to industry groups, lawyers, and public agencies on construction and design law issues and is the author of numerous articles, chapters, and books in the area of construction law. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers (Construction) in America (2004-2006), the International Who's Who of Construciton Lawyers (2005), and "Best in the Bar" (Construction) (2005). Howard Arnett (JD '77) joined Karnopp Petersen in 1980, after working for several years on the Navajo Indian Reservation in Arizona. His practice area focuses on federal Indian law, especially in the representation of the Confederated Tribes of the Warm Springs Reservation of Oregon in matters involving treaty rights and tribal sovereignty. Mr. Arnett serves on the Oregon State Bar's Legal Services Stakeholders Task Force, and the Oregon State Bar's Indian Law and Legal Services sections. Jeffrey A. Beaver
Jeffrey Beaver (JD '85) joined Graham & Dunn in 1997, and focuses his practice on financial institutions, condemnation, and commercial litigation. He has successfully tried numerous multi-million dollar cases, including condemnation matters, claims arising from reconstruction and construction issues, breach of contract, and UCC claims. Mr. Beaver is a member of the Washington and Oregon bars. He is a co-author of the 1998 and 2001 Cumulative Supplements for the Washington Motor Vehicle Accident Litigation Deskbook, and has been named a Washington Law & Politics "Super Lawyer" several years running. The Honorable David V. Brewer (JD '77) has served on the Oregon Court of Appeals since 1999, and was elevated to Chief Judge in 2004. Prior to serving on the Court of Appeals, Judge Brewer was a circuit court judge in Lane County, Oregon. His community activities include service as past president of the Lane County Bar Association, as well as served to the Lane County Domestic Violence Council, State Council on Court Procedures, and numerous Oregon Stat Bar committees and task forces, including the Practice Procedure Committee, the Indigent Task Force, and the Legal Services Task Force. As Vice President and General Counsel for Nike, Inc., James Carter's (JD '76) duties include management of global legal services of Nike, Inc., strategic planning, and providing legal counsel to business units and management. In addition to his responsibility for the legal department, Nike's global government affairs department also reports to Mr. Carter. Before he was promoted to General Counsel, Mr. Carter was General Counsel/USA and Americas Regions for Nike. Mr. Carter is a member of the Oregon State Bar, the American Bar Association, and the American Corporate Council Association. He is Chair of the Board of Directors of the Classroom Law Project and a member of the Executive Committee and Board of Directors of the Oregon Business Association. John Crawford (JD '73) has been with Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt since his graduation from the University of Oregon School of Law. His practice is diverse and includes bankruptcy, commercial, and energy law, with a primary focus on business reorganization. Admitted to practice in Oregon, the United States District Court for the District of Oregon, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Mr. Crawford is also active in professional groups, including the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute, as well as the Business and Corporate Law, Debtor/Creditor, Real Estate, and Land Use sections of the Oregon State Bar. Katherine Gurun (JD '75) joined JAMS as a mediator and arbitrator in 2006. Ms. Gurun was formerly Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Bechtel Corporation, one of the world's premier engineering and construction companies. Her experience spans both private industry and public service in engineering and construction, business, energy, project finance, joint venture disputes, risk management, and nuclear disarmament. In addition to her extensive transactional background and business acumen, Ms. Gurun has led or managed the resolution of more than $5 billion of disputed matters both in the United States and internationally. Prior to becoming an attorney, Chris Kent (JD '85) worked in construction and engineering. His law practice emphasizes complex commercial litigation serving individuals and businesses in the areas of commercial, shareholder, franchise, securities, insurance, and design defect litigation. Mr. Kent frequently lectures for continuing legal education programs sponsored by the Oregon State Bar, and is a long-term supporter of pro bono legal services in the Portland area. Richard Meeker (JD '74) is the publisher of the popular Willamette Week newspaper in Portland, as well as the Santa Fe Reporter in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Willamette Week is known for its investigative journalism, and has broken a number of controversial stories. In 2005, one of its reporters won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for an expose of a former Oregon governor. Other stories broken by the Willamette Week have led to the resignation of a prominent college president and the recall of a Portland legislator. In addition, Willamette Week has raised and donated hundreds of thousands of dollars for the benefit of non-profit organizations in the Portland area. Hardy Myers
Hardy Myers (LLB '64) was in private law practice with Stoel Rives and its predecessor firms from 1965 until his election as Oregon Attorney General in 1996. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2004. While in private practice, Mr. Myers focused on labor and employment law and government affairs law. Mr. Myers also served as a state representative in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1975-1985, and was Speaker of the House from 1979-1983. Carol Pratt (JD '98) is of counsel in K&L Gates's Portland office, where her practice focuses on regulatory issues associated with the research and marketing of new medical technologies. She holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience and has an extensive background in medical research. Maryann Yelnosky (JD '86) has devoted her career to representing Oregon employers, specializing in litigation, employee management and employer training. When she isn't engaged in the practice of law, Maryann is a Public Member of the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners.
