Joshua Burstein

Joshua Burstein Assistant Dean and Director for Career Services

Joshua Burstein, who earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and his law degree from New York University School of Law, has served as the Assistant Dean for Career Services since July 2008. He has a diverse background in law practice on both coasts. He spent approximately six years in private practice in New York City and in Beverly Hills, California, as an associate at Roger & Wells LLP (now Clifford Chance LLP); Ervin, Cohen & Jessup LLP; and Patterson, Belknap, Webb & Tyler LLP. He has also served as associate general counsel at the Service Employees International Union (AFL-CIO) Local 32BJ in New York City.

In 2002, Burstein returned to the academic world, taking the position of Associate Director at the New York University School of Law's Office of Career Services; he was later promoted to Director of Counseling and Career Development. From 2005 until his move to Oregon in 2008, he served as an Associate Dean at the University of Richmond School of Law.

Burstein is active in NALP (The Association for Legal Career Professionals). He served three terms on the organization's Recruitment Practices Committee. In addition, two of his articles have been published in the NALP Bulletin. Journalists have sought out his expertise on legal employment issues on numerous occasions, and he has been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, ABA Student Lawyer, National Law Journal, Virginia Lawyers Weekly, and other publications. He has been invited to speak by the Oregon State Bar and by the law firm of Williams Mullen.

Burstein serves on the law school's Diversity Committee. He received an award from the Black Law Students Association at the University of Richmond in 2008 for his diversity efforts at that school. He is a Board Member of the Lane County ACLU, and is a member of Basic Rights Oregon, Human Rights Campaign, and Temple Beth Israel.
