Rebecca Tsosie to Present Third Annual Rennard Strickland Lecture October 15

The Native American Sovereignty Project will present the third annual Rennard Strickland Lecture at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, October 15, in the Knight Law Center 110.

Oregon Law's Inaugural Oregon Tribes Professor Rebecca Tsosie will present thisyear's lecture. Her presentation, titled "Native Nations and Climate Change: Building an Ethics of Environmental Stewardship," will address the role of Native environmental stewardship in climate change policy based on their unique structures and knowledge, and how Native peoples can protect their land and resources.

Professor Tsosie is a professor of law at Arizona State University and director of the university's Indian Legal Program. She is of Yaqui descent and has worked extensively with tribal governments and organizations and serves as a Supreme Court justice for the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation.

Professor Tsosie has written and published widely on doctrinal and theoretical issues related to tribal sovereignty, environmental policy, and cultural rights. She is the author of many prominent articles dealing with cultural resources and cultural pluralism. Professor Tsosie is the co-author of a federal Indian law casebook titled American Indian Law: Native Nations and the Federal System. In addition, Professor Tsosie annually speaks at several national conferences on tribal sovereignty, self-determination, and tribal rights to environmental and cultural resources.
