Monday, January 10 WELCOME TEA: Hilary Charlesworth
10:00 A.M., Faculty lounge. The Wayne Morse Center welcomes its
twenty-fourth Morse professor, Hilary Charlesworth, as well as visitors
Karen Engle and Ileana Porras. (See January 11 listing.) Charlesworth
directs the Centre for International and Public Law at Australian
National University in Canberra. She will be in residence through

Tuesday, January 11 DEDICATION: Many Nations Longhouse
Following a series of private ceremonies for Native groups, the public
dedication of the long-awaited longhouse behind the Knight Law Center
will take place on Tuesday, January 11 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a
salmon feast sponsored by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Law
professors Rennard Strickland and Mary Wood are interviewed about the
project in the December 6 Inside Oregon newsletter. STORY:

The Public Interest/Public Service student group hosts southern California
attorney Paul Hoffman. He was the lead attorney on a Supreme Court case
that exposed constitutional problems in the handling of suspected

Friday, January 21 VISITOR: Governor Ted Kulongoski
10:00 A.M. 11:30 A.M., Room 175. The governor and his wife, alumna
Mary Oberst Ã84, will talk informally about public service careers at
10 A.M. Afterwards, they will tour the Knight Law Center, including
OregonÃs Office for Community Dispute Resolution, whose future funding
will be decided during this legislative session. At 11:00 A.M., the

Sunday, January 23 OPENING: UO Art Museum
11 A.M. 5:00 P.M. UOÃs art museum reopens with a new name after a
major remodel - Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art. A branch of EugeneÃs
Marcheà restaurant is already serving eager members of the UO community
on the south side of the remodeled building Monday-Friday, 9:00-4:30.

KUDOS
Voices from the Orange Revolution
Rumor has it that three visiting professors from Lviv National
University will speak to the law school about the Orange Revolution
the popular and perfectly-organized uprising in Ukraine that
successfully replayed a contested presidential election.
Andriy Andrusevych teaches international environmental law, tourism
law, international negotiations, and environmental rights. Natalia
Andrusevych teaches European Union law. Zoryana Kozak teaches labor
law, and supervises the environmental law clinical program. All of them
are on the staff of Ecopravo-Lviv, a public interest environmental law
organization.
For the next few weeks, they will work in the Environmental Law Center on the
second floor. INFO
The Chairman
Gov. Ted Kulongoski made it official in December Assistant Professor
Tom Lininger is now chair of the Oregon Criminal Justice Commission. He
has been acting chair since 2003 and a member since 1998. With a budget
of $12 million, the bipartisan commission helps plans criminal justice
policy, writes OregonÃs sentencing guidelines and administers grant
money for juvenile crime prevention. Chairman Lininger says top
priorities for 2004 include reconsidering the stateÃs sentencing
guidelines and advising the legislature on combating methamphetamine
trafficking. Commission website
Tsunami
State Department human rights advisor Ajay Bhatt reported from
Madras, India during the recent earthquake and massive tsunami that
caused so much heartbreak and devastation in the region. Hear his
interview with Robert Siegel of NPRÃs All Things Considered, aired on
December 27, 2004.

Make New Friends but Keep the Old...
Condolence messages have been pouring in from federal judges, the
attorney general, board members, and distinguished alums from all over
the state. Why? TheyÃre going to miss a very good friend. During her
silver anniversary year at the law school, the assistant director of
development and alumni relations, Connie Tapp, decided to explore the
view from Johnson Hall. Beginning January 10, she will be working in
the presidentÃs office as executive assistant to the UO general
counsel. It has been a true honor and privilege for me to have served
this law school for 25 1/2 years. I love this school! Tapp said. She
knows all of our secrets and now will get to know the universityÃs as
well. ThereÃs a book in there somewhere, Connie ....
Ethically Speaking
On January 1, new Oregon Rules of Professional Conduct took effect. Law
professor and real property expert Steve Bender has gathered his
colleagues to help the practicing bar get ahead of the curve former
prosecutor Tom Lininger and business law specialist Judd Sneirson join
Bender in a series of one-hour CLE presentations they will bring to law
offices or any location- in the Portland metro area. They can clarify
the high points of the ethics rules, discuss corporate misconduct under
the new rules, and explore the multijurisdictional practice of law
under Oregon rules. INFO

Discrimination with lessons from the Japanese American internment

Friday and Saturday, February 18-19 Moot Court Competition
UO law hosts the regional Client Counseling Competition this year.
Teams from ten law schools will attend a reception on Friday night and
will compete all day Saturday. Once before, our team won the
international competition maybe it will happen again....
