July 1st 2009 UO Portland Offers Weekly Summer Discussion Series
The University of Oregon in Portland will
continue its "Summer Spotlight: Urban Inspirations" discussion series
at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, July 30 with a presentation by Oregon Law Professor Caroline Forell. The weekly programs in July, which are free and open to
the public, examine topics surrounding law, sustainability, creativity,
and culture. All events will take place at the White Stag Block, 70 NW
Couch Street, in downtown Portland.

July 9, 6:00 p.m.: "Seeing Green: Eco-friendly
Construction from the Earth Up"
An expert in sustainable practices and tax policies, Oregon Law Professor Nancy Shurtz will provide an overview of green commercial and residential buildings in Portland, both new construction and retrofits. She also will discuss ongoing green practices within buildings and tax policy favoring green construction. July 16, 6:30 p.m.: "Free Culture: Creating Copyright and
Copyright Creation" July 23, 6:00 p.m.: "Beautiful Soup: An Assessment of
Current Visual Culture" July 30, 6:00 p.m.: "Rules of the Road: Bicyclists' Rights
and Responsibilities"
An avid cyclist, Oregon Law Professor Caroline Forell
will survey the current legal rights and responsibilities of Oregon cyclists,
paying special attention to recent legal changes and proposals for improvements
to bike laws. After her talk, she will lead a bike ride around the Waterfront
Bike Loop (10.4-mile route). Those riding to this event can access the UO White
Stag's secured bike parking via the building entrance under the Burnside
Bridge.
