How to Set Up Email for Mac OS

The University of Oregon School of Law recommends and supports two email programs for Mac OS: Mail and Entourage. Both programs work well with our UO Mail server and offer a full range of features. Please choose one of these programs and follow the instructions below to get set up.

Configuring Mac OS X 10.4 Mail

This procedure applies to Mail 2.0 and higher.

Open the Mail program to start the setup process. If the New Account process does not start automatically, go to the Mail menu, select Preferences..., click the Accounts button and then click the button in the lower left-hand corner.

The steps below will guide you through the New Account process.

1. The first page is Welcome to Mail. Click the Continue button

2. From the Account Type menu select IMAP.

3. For Account Description, enter a meaningful name like UOregon.

4. For Full Name, enter your name as you would like it displayed on your email messages.

5. For Email Address, enter your full uoregon email address (e.g. jersmith@uoregon.edu).

6. Click the Continue button.

7. For Incoming Mail Server, enter imap.uoregon.edu.

8. For User Name enter the first part of your email address (i.e. jersmith).

9. Click the Continue button.

10. Ignore the warning message and click the Continue button.

11. Click the Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) check box.

12. From the Authentication menu select Password.

13. For Outgoing Mail Server enter smtp.uoregon.edu.

14. Click the Use Authentication check box.

15. For User Name, enter the first part of your email address (the same information as step 8, above).

16. Click the Continue button.

17. Ignore the warning message and click the Continue button.

18. In the Account Summary page, double-check the Full Name, Email address and User Name information listed there. If any of those details are incorrect, click the Go Back button until you find that information, make corrections, then click the "Continue" button until you return to the "Account Summary" window.

19. Click the Done button to finish the procedure if you do not wish to create another account.

Configuration is complete!

Configuring Entourage

To configure Entourage (all versions):

1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts.

2. Click on the Mail tab.

3. Click the New button.

4. For Entourage 2004 users, click the Configure Account Manually button.

5. Select IMAP and click the OK button.

6.You will now be in the Account Settings tab in the Edit Account window. In the Account name box enter a descriptive name for this email account.

7. In the Name box enter your name.

8. In the E-mail address box enter your e-mail address.

9. In the Account ID box enter your username.

10. In the IMAP server box, enter your server name, which is imap.uoregon.edu.

11. Click the Click here for advanced receiving options box.

12. Click the This IMAP service requires a secure connection (SSL) box.

13. Enter smtp.uoregon.edu in the SMTP server field.

15. Click the Click here for advanced sending options box.

16. Check the SMTP server requires secure connection (SSL) box.

17. Check the SMTP server requires authentication box and make sure that the Use same settings as receiving mail server circle is selected.

18. Close the Click here for advanced sending options window and click OK.

You have finished setting up your email account!
